Daniel James Andrew was born on the 12th. November  1885, to Francis and Sophia Andrew nee David. He was  their first child and they lived at 21 Grenfell Town,  Pentrechwyth, the home of Sophia's mother. Although his  mother, Sophia, was Welsh speaking and came from a  Welsh speaking family, he was brought up as an English  speaker due to Francis' refusal to allow Sophia to speak  Welsh at home. His early childhood was spent in  Pentrechwyth but by 1891 the family had moved to the  town centre and he was brought up mostly at 16 Burrows  Road. 
His first recorded full time job was in 1900 as a Post  Office telegraph messenger, aged fifteen. However he  decided to follow his father Francis and become a painter.  Daniel James Andrew married Beatrice Susannah Short  on August 5th. 1907. Although from Swansea, her parents  came from North Devon. Their first child, Clifford, was  born on 16th. May 1908 and the event prompted the finest  and most timely family photograph that still survives.  (See image to right). Daniel and Beatrice had a total of seven children with the  first five separated in time from the last two by the First  World War. They were; Clifford, 16th. May 1908; Beatrice  May, 30th. November 1909; Lillian, 23rd. March 1911; Daniel, 5th. October 1913; Doris, 25th November 1915;  Alfred,  1920 and Phyllis, 31st July 1923.
