Daniel James Andrew born 1885, Swansea
Daniel James Andrew was born on the 12th. November
1885, to Francis and Sophia Andrew nee David. He was
their first child and they lived at 21 Grenfell Town,
Pentrechwyth, the home of Sophia's mother. Although his
mother, Sophia, was Welsh speaking and came from a
Welsh speaking family, he was brought up as an English
speaker due to Francis' refusal to allow Sophia to speak
Welsh at home. His early childhood was spent in
Pentrechwyth but by 1891 the family had moved to the
town centre and he was brought up mostly at 16 Burrows
Road.
His first recorded full time job was in 1900 as a Post
Office telegraph messenger, aged fifteen. However he
decided to follow his father Francis and become a painter.
Daniel James Andrew married Beatrice Susannah Short
on August 5th. 1907. Although from Swansea, her parents
came from North Devon. Their first child, Clifford, was
born on 16th. May 1908 and the event prompted the finest
and most timely family photograph that still survives.
