James Andrew baptised 1828, High Bickington
James Andrew was baptised on 3rd.
February 1828 in High Bickington. At about
two years of age, he and his two sisters
and parents John and Ann, all moved to
Swansea in search of a more prosperous
life. Sometime after 1847 when the family
were living at Queen Street, he met Mary
Jane Bennallack. The Bennallack family
had moved from Foxhole to Pleasant
Street, around the corner from James.
Their origins were in Redruth, Cornwall,
and are detailed separately. James and
Mary Jane were married on the 6th. March
1853 and on the 30th. July that year their
first child Emily Bennallack Andrew was
born.
James and Mary went on to have ten
children, although three died in infancy. In age order they were:- Emily Bennallack 1853, James
Francis 1854, Harriet 1856, Harriet 1858, Joshua 1860, Joshua 1861, Francis 1863, Elizabeth Ann
1865, William John 1867 and Sydney in 1870.
James Andrew did not follow family tradition and go into the brewing and malting business. He
started off as an apprentice gardener but quickly changed to become a sawyer working in a saw
pit. He later became a topman, which meant that he was in control of the operation at the top of
the sawpit. His son Joshua was a stonemason but all of the other sons became house painters.
