The Short family
Joshua Short was born at Marland in Frithelstock, North Devon in about 1803 and married Rebecca Beer who was born in 1807 and came from Monkleigh in North Devon.  He worked as a farm labourer and in 1851 was living at Comb Cottage, Torrington, with his wife and three children. An older son, Thomas, had already left home and worked as a farm labourer. Thomas, the first child of Joshua and Rebecca Short, was Christened on 29th. January 1832 at Monkleigh, North Devon, not far from Bideford. He married Rebecca Bagelhole, pronounced Baglow, a farm servant, at Buckland Brewer, North Devon in 1852 and had two children, Richard and Joshua; both named after their grandfathers. Rebecca Baglow or Bagelhole, was born on 29th. April 1832 at Buckland Brewer. Her parents were Ann and Richard Baglow from Buckland Brewer, her father being a farm labourer. The family can be traced back to the 1760’s to Thomas and Sarah Baghilhole from Parkham, south of Bideford.
It is likely that after their marriage they lived with Rebecca's mother Ann, but by 1861, Thomas and Rebecca Short and their two children Richard and Joshua were living with Thomas's parents Joshua and Rebecca Short at Chivenor, north of Bideford. By 1871 they had moved to Ilfracombe  where Thomas was still described as an agricultural labourer. Thomas later worked as a farm bailiff before becoming a carman for the railway. A carman - also known as a cartman or haulier - was someone employed by the railway company to deliver goods locally from the nearest branch-line station. Thomas's first wife, Rebecca Short, died in 1885 and the following year Thomas married Elizabeth Knight, aged 51 who eventually lived to be over a hundred years of age. Thomas Short's eldest son, Richard, was destined to marry Susanna Mock and eventually moved to Swansea, working briefly as a porter in a spirit stores, then as a policeman and finally joining the railway.
