Mary Owen was Mary Sophia Owen's eldest child and was born on the 4th. August 1917.  As mentioned previously there is no information about her father - Sophia alone it seems  knowing his identity, and something she kept secret until  her death. Following Sophia's marriage in 1919 her  daughter Mary remained at No. 60, being brought up by  her grandparents George and Mary Owen, an arrangement  that was probably seen as being the best for all  concerned, especially Mary's.  Sophia's sister and Mary's aunt, Edith Maud, married  Ernest Fox in 1919 and also lived at No. 60 with her  children. Living in the same house as the Fox's, Mary grew  up with her aunt's children, Ernest (Ernie) and Margaret  (Peg) at first and then later with Jack, Jim and Dorothy  (Doll), seeing them more as brothers and sisters than  cousins.  Like all of the Fox children and her mother before  her, she attended St. Thomas School on Kilvey Terrace.  Along with Peg, Mary helped to look after Doll, the  youngest member of the family who was born in 1930 and  who fell ill with rheumatic fever when she was just a few  years old. The illness left Doll with heart problems that in  later life required an operation to fit artificial heart valves.   No other information is known about Mary's childhood or  teenage years, and very few photographs from the period have survived. It is not known how  she met Daniel Andrew, but by about 1935/6 they were engaged.
