Daniel and Sophia David
Francis Andrew's future wife Sophia  David was born in 1866 in Grenfell  Town, Pentrechwyth. It was a small  community on the East bank of the  river Tawe, established by the  Grenfell family to provide housing  for their employees who worked at  the Upper and Middle Bank Copper  Works. Her father was Daniel David,  a copperman engaged in the  roasting and smelting of the copper  ore. Her mother was Sophia David,  nee Howell, and both parents were  natives of Bonymaen.
Her father, Daniel, was at various  times described as a copper miner. This term is misleading however as there are no known  copper reserves in the area. The term copper miner most probably describes  someone who worked as a copperworks coal miner. There were many drift  mines near to Pentrechwyth that supplied coal to the various local copper  works, and some of them were owned and operated by the works themselves.  Sophia David's family background has proved difficult to trace. Her mother was  Anne Evan who came from outside the area. In 1814, she married Thomas  Howell, a collier, in Llansamlet parish and Sophia was born in 1823. They must  also have managed a smallholding since Sophia is referred to as a cottager's  daughter. A cottager is a very old term that describes someone farming less  than 2 acres of land.
