William Andrew baptised 1763, Swimbridge
William Andrew was baptised 24th. May 1763 in
Swimbridge. He married Mary Luxton in 1784 in High
Bickington and had two daughters, Susanna in 1785
and Jenny in 1787. Susanna was born in High
Bickington but shortly after, they moved to Alwington,
a very small village between Bideford and Parkham,
where Jenny was born.
The following year his wife Mary died and in 1789 he
married Elizabeth Nanskevile in Parkham. They had
four children; William 1790 who died in 1791, John
1792, William 1794 and Prudence 1795. The last two
baptised in Northam.
William died in Alwington in 1797 aged 34. His wife Elizabeth and the surviving children
moved back to Atherington, near High Bickington, where William’s younger brother
James was living and working as a maltster. They had a relationship and Elizabeth fell
pregnant with James’s illegitimate child. She returned to her family in Parkham where
Harriet was born in 1813. Harriet became the subject of a bastardy bond in Parkham,
but it is clear that she grew up with both her parents in Atherington and her half
siblings John, William and Prudence.
Elizabeth died in High Bickington in 1834 whilst her daughter Harriet went on to
marry Thomas Avery in High Bickington, later moving to Barnstaple. Her father James
Andrew died in May, 1863. Her half brother John Andrew is our next descendant.
