John Andrew baptised 1792, Alwington
On October 30th. 1821 he
married Ann Down in the
parish church of St. Mary in
High Bickington. There they
had four children, Susanna in
1822, Caroline in 1825, John
in 1826 and James in 1828.
John had inherited from his grandfather and had watched his cousin Joseph, become a
wealthy man. Joseph lived in Swansea and had acquired the business and properties built up
by his father Philip. (Refer to their history files for details). John was perhaps blind to this and
just saw that there was money to be made and that he could also do it. With Joseph’s help he
moved his family to Swansea around 1830, probably using his inheritance.
John and Ann had another four children; Joseph 1831, Ann 1834, Harriet 1836 and John
1840. John (1826) died in High Bickington whilst Caroline, Harriet and John (1840) died in
Swansea. Joseph never married so only John’s son, James would keep the family’s name alive.
John Andrew was
baptised 21st. March 1792 in
the small village of Alwington.
When his father died the
family moved to Atherington
and lived with his uncle,
James Andrew. James was a
maltster and must have
influenced John because he
too took up the profession.
James Andrew born
1828 in High
Bickington to John and
Ann Andrew
