William and Jane Owen's eldest son  William had met a girl called Sophia Rees. Her  parents lived in Llandygwydd, between  Cardigan and Newcastle Emlyn. William and  Sophia were married in February 1849 at St.  Mary’s Church and had their first child,  George Owen, on the 1st. November 1849. The couple later had six more children, Sophia in  1852, Hannah in 1854, William in 1860, Rachel  in 1863, Thomas in 1865 and David in 1867.   It was during the 1860's that the family's  connection with Fabian's Bay Church first  began. William and Sophia Owen allowed  their home to be used for Sunday school  teachings and so started a family link with  Fabian's Bay Church that persisted into the 1940's.  By 1871 the family of William and Sophia Owen were living at 17 Miers Street with William  running his own blacksmith shop and foundry employing five men and one boy. In 1875 the  foundry, called William Owen and Son, Miers Street Foundry, was actually located in Delhi  Street but backed on to his home in Miers Street. William Owen was the entrepreneur of the  family and became a reasonably wealthy man dealing with both iron and brass ware. His  foundry in Delhi Street was the culmination of his achievements, however, in the difficult  economic conditions of the long depression, the business suffered cash flow problems and in  1878 his business was liquidated. It can only be presumed that the money raised from the  auction of the foundry and his home not only paid off his creditors but also allowed him to re-  establish his blacksmith business, albeit on a smaller scale, since he continued to work  independently and in later life was described as “living on his own means”.
