Thomas Avery baptised 1807, Barnstaple
Thomas Avery was born in 1807 in  Barnstaple to Berry and Grace Avery. He  was an inn keeper by trade. In 1831 in High  Bickington he married Harriet Andrew, the  daughter of James Andrew and Elizabeth  Andrew. Elizabeth was the wife of William  Andrew (1763) but moved in with James  when William died. She was also the mother  of our John Andrew above, so Harriet and  John were half siblings.   Thomas and Harriet had three sons, all  born in Tawstock. They were James Andrew  Avery born 1834, Thomas Avery born 1835  and Joshua Avery born 1837. By 1844,  Thomas Avery was at the Angel Inn, Quay,  Barnstaple and was recorded there in the  1851 and 1861 censuses. In 1861, he was  visited by our John Andrew’s daughter  Susanna, John’s granddaughter Emily  Bennallack and Charles Shimell – Joseph  Andrew’s son. In 1862 he was declared  bankrupt and spent a short time in Exeter  Gaol. Following his release he went to stay  with his brother Berry in Braunton and set  himself up again as an inn keeper.
He became bankrupt again in 1864 and  moved to Swansea (perhaps to avoid being  re-arrested?) where he lodged with his niece  Susanna Andrew – the same Susanna that  visited him in 1861. She was a grocer. He  died in 1878 with Enoch Adams present at  the death. Thomas and Harriet’s children: James  Andrew Avery became an accountant and  emigrated to Buenos Aires in Argentina.  Joshua Avery married Catherine Elizabeth  Andrew in Swansea in 1860. She was the  daughter of Joseph Andrew and a sister to  Charles Shimell Andrew. They moved to  Exeter after the wedding.
