William John Andrew born 1867, Swansea
William John named after James’s
grandfather and father, was a
master painter and married
Elizabeth Ann Williams from
Swansea in 1886. By 1901 they
had five children and were living
at 20 Baptist Well Place. William
possibly suffered from lead
poisoning brought on by mixing
the lead based paints he used in
his job. He died of exhaustion due
to dementia in June 1911 at the
Hay-on-Wye Lunatic Asylum.
Elizabeth re-married soon after
his death. They had seven
children: Philip 1889; Florence
1891; Lilly 1892; Beatrice 1895;
Violet 1900; Thomas 1904 and
Phyllis 1911 born after William
had died.
Lilly Andrew married Richard Coates in December 1912. Richard’s cousin Elizabeth Jane Coates,
married Lilly’s cousin, Francis Brinley Andrew in August 1922. (Lilly was William’s daughter
whilst Francis was the son of William’s brother, Francis). William’s youngest daughter Phyllis,
who never knew her father, married William Airs and moved to London.
